Opened in October of 1988 and damaged in December of the same 1988 by the locals which did not want the cable car to be built thinking it was blasphemy to the church, also thinking that the upper station was ugly. Later in 90th first tower and cables removed also upper station. Second bigger tower removed in 2008.
"Sakgiproshakht" Institute project by Vakhtang Lejava.
2 towers.
12 person cabins from Tbilisi Aviation Factory.
Sad story

Designed by Vakhtang Lejava and Sakgiproshakht team, built between 1960 and 1961.
Opened on May 1961.
630 meters long aerial tramway used to connect Didube district with the shortest way to Giorgi Saakadze Square in Saburtalo District to Technical University of Tbilisi at a speed of 6 m/s.
Each open type cabin could carry up to 25 passengers and they were produced in Tbilisi Aviation Factory.
Abandoned in 1980.
Cable car had no supporting towers.
In 1980 cable car was abandoned because after building Vakhushti bridge on Mtkvari river and the embankment roads to the bridge, the roads appeared to near to the cables. A new project of reconstruction was made in 1980 to risen the cables with 7 meters. Eventually this never came to ა reality and the cable car remained abandoned.
The stations remained almost intact till 2001 and then the upper station was redesigned as residential house and the lower one into stores and retails.

Head Engineer and designer of "Sakgiproshakht" Biureau in Tbilisi since 1955 to 1999. Author of projects of almost all heavy bicable aerial tramways designed by the Biureau throughout Soviet Union. His vision for passenger ropeways as urban, leisure and turistic transit is the reason, why all ropeways projects of the institute were realised in urbanised areas. Cities, towns. But how did his passion for passenger ropeways emerge?
He volunteered for the Finnish front as early as 1939, then fought in Ukraine. Passed half of Europe, freeing Bulgaria, Romania, Poland, Hungary, Austria. It was there, at the front, that he first saw the passenger cable cars and was forever captivated by them. Subsequently, he took part in the liberation of Austria, was shell-shocked here. There is no doubt that it was then that he became interested in this type of transport.
Apparently, the impressions were so strong that after demobilization in 1946, he entered the Polytechnic Institute at the Faculty of Mechanics. He didn’t stay at the department, but went to work in design organizations, and then went to the Bratsk Hydroelectric Power Station, where he designed various industrial facilities. In 1955, V. Lezhava returned to Tbilisi. The young specialist was immediately admitted to the "Sakgiproshakht" Institute as a design engineer. And soon he was appointed the head of the group of cableway designers, then the head of the institute's aerial passenger cableways department. Then, until the end of his career, he will work as the chief specialist in cable cars - until the end of the 1990s, the actual collapse of the institute.
“Trademark” that distinguishes the ropeways of the talented, unique design engineer V.M. Lezhava, by which they are easy to recognize - are light, elegant, rounded cars with a bending connection - the car looks like a cherry with a handle.
He passed away in 2002 after 8 years of fighting the results of stroke he had in 1994.

Yes the pole is missing.
It was not a rehabilitation, but itslef stations were already built in 1971, only the process of building the cable car with numerous delays lasted for 17 years and opened only in 1988, August.
